BNP rally demands Khaleda’s release, treatment abroad

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday went out on demonstrations in the capital and district headquarters demanding immediate release of its ailing chairperson Khaleda Zia and ensuring her treatment abroad.

The party activists also clashed with police in several districts including Khulna, Natore and Barishal leaving scores injured.

The party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a rally in Dhaka said that BNP has no alternatives to waging movement for freeing former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

He said that the government has destroyed all the institutions and used them politically.

The BNP will submit memorandums to all the Deputy Commissioners across Bangladesh on Wednesday to press for their demands, announced Mirza Fakhrul at the rally held in front of the National Press Club on Monday. Dhaka south BNP convener Abdus Salam presided over the event where the party standing committee members Nazrul Islam Khan, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and Aman Ullah Aman spoke.

On November 20, the BNP called the countrywide demonstration demanding the release of the party chief Khaleda and her advanced treatment abroad.

In Natore, at least 20 activists of BNP were injured in a clash with police at Alaipur when police clashed with the activists.

Police said that BNP activists attacked them from a procession that prompted police to charge batons. Daily Jugantor’s Natore correspondent Shahidul Haque Sarder was injured during the violence and he shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Natore Superintendent of Police Liton Kumar Shah said seven members of the police were injured in the incident.

In Khulna, over 20 people were injured in a clash between BNP activists and police in front of the BNP office in Khulna city on Monday morning. Khulna city unit BNP’s president and also the central organising secretary Nazrul Islam Manju and five photojournalists were among the injured people.

The clash ensued around 11:45am when the activists of BNP tried to bring out a procession from their office demanding party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s advanced treatment abroad.

Police arrested two BNP activists from the spot around 12:30pm.

In Barishal, leaders and activists from different units of local BNP brought out a procession in the city.

Police charged batons to disperse the BNP activists when they tried to gather near the Aswini Kumar Hall in the city.

City BNP convener Moniruzzaman Faruque and member secretary Mir Zahidul Kabir Zahid among others spoke at the rally.

They alleged that the government is curbing the BNP chairperson’s basic right to get proper treatment.

They also accused the government of interfering with the judiciary and found it an ominous sign for the country.

In Narayanganj, several hundred activists gathered at Chashara intersection as per of central committee’s decision.

Narayanganj district BNP convener Taimur Alam Khandoker at the rally asked the government to allow the party chief Khaleda to go abroad for advanced treatment.
