Tax return filling deadline extended

The National Board of Revenue has extended the deadline for filing the income tax returns for the Tax Year 2021-22 by one month to December 31 from November 30.

The NBR on Tuesday decided to give the taxpayers additional 30 days to submit their tax returns, according to a statutory regulatory of the board issued on Tuesday night.

The SRO said the deadline for individual taxpayers was extended considering the Covid-19 fallouts.

Officials of the NBR said there are currently more than 68 lakh taxpayers in the country.

Of them, around 25 lakh taxpayers were able to submit their tax returns until 29 November. The time has been extended at the request of traders and taxpayers.

An official said the decision was taken at the instruction from higher authorities, adding that many taxpayers did not file their returns and asked the authorities to extend the deadline.

However, the revenue board had earlier said there would be no extensions after November 30, adding that citizens would have to pay fines to submit tax returns after that date.

According to the Income Tax Act, it is mandatory for all TIN holders to file tax returns by November 30 with certain exceptions.
