The protesting students have decided to limit their demonstrations as the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations will begin across the country from Thursday.

The students were continuing the protests despite half fare were implemented in the capital from Wednesday.

Students will continue their peaceful movement from 12 pm to 1 pm daily, seeking 11-point demand including road safety and half fare in public transports across the country.

During their limited demonstration, protesters will form human-chains at one side of the roads to avoid disruption in movements of HSC examinees and other commuters.

The protesters made the announcement during a demonstration at capital’s Rampura Bridge area on Wednesday.

Earlier, in the wake of student protests over the past week, Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association on Tuesday announced that all students will get a 50 per cent discount on bus fares in the Dhaka metropolitan area from Wednesday.

However, the discounted fares for students will be allowed only from 7am to 8pm and it will not be applicable on government holidays, weekly holidays and other holidays.

On the other hand, students demanded quick justice over the recent incidents of student killings in road crashes, ensuring compensation for the victims’ families and construction of foot-over bridges in Gulistan and Rampura Bridge areas.

In their 11-point charters, students also requested the government to issue a gazette notification regarding the half fare and implement it round the year without considering any holidays.

Number of BRTC busses should be increased at all routes, they suggested, adding that, effective measures must be taken against corrupted officials of BRTA, driving without driving licence or driving vehicles without fitness.

They sought action against officials involved with bribery and corruption in traffic division and launching of single company bus on one route to prevent reckless driving.

Beside, garbage-carrying trucks of Dhaka city corporations should not run from 12 am to 5 pm, protesters said.

Meanwhile, like the past few days, hundreds of students from different colleges including Ekramunnesa School and College, Imperial College, and Siddheshwari Girls College thronged at Badda Link road on Wednesday again.

Their demonstration triggered traffic congestion from Kuril Biswa Road to Rampura bridge area. Students were also seen checking documents of vehicles and controlling traffic on the Malibagh-Kuril Road.

Rayhan Abir, a student said “We will return to our homes after the government accepts out demands.”

But traffic returned to normal around 2 pm after the students left the road.

Students also caught a motor-cycle driver without any BRTA registration on the Rampura Bridge at 2 pm and handed him over to traffic police.
