Incessant rains triggered by depression over the Bay of Bengal, caused immense sufferings to the Dhaka residents for the second consecutive day on Monday.

City commuters especially officer-goers and HSC examinees, suffered greatly on roads as rain water submerged many streets causing traffic congestions.

Torrential rain started on Sunday morning that continued till Monday afternoon with several irregular intervals, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

“The weather is likely to improve by tomorrow with reduction in rainfall” said Meteorologist Hafizur Rahman.

Met office recorded 44 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours till 6 am on Monday and 67 mm of rainfall from 6 am to 3 pm in the capital, he stated.

The low-income people including day-labourers were seen passing idle time due to shortage of works while many were forced to stay indoors as rain continued throughout the day.

In the next 24-hours from Monday morning, more rain may occur in Khulna, Barishal, Dhaka and Chattogram divisions as the depression in the Bay of Bengal weakened to a well-marked low, said a Met office bulletin.

Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, bulletin said.

Rain or thunder showers may also occur at a few places over Rajshahi division and at one or two places over Rangpur division with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, it added.

Temperature may fall slightly at night over the western part of the country and it may remain nearly unchanged elsewhere over the country. Day temperatures may also fall slightly over the country, according to the BMD.

Rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty or squally wind speed of 40-50 kph is likely to occur over North Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh, it added.

The depression over northwest bay and adjoining west-central bay moved north-northeast awards, weakening into a well-marked low over the northwest bay and adjoining west Bengal-Bangladesh coast. It will move further in a north-northeasterly direction and weaken into a low by evening on Monday.

Under the influence of the well-marked low, deep convection is continuing over North Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh. Besides, the steep pressure gradient is still there over North Bay.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal number three.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice.
