Dhaka East West Elevated Expressway to be built on PPP basis

Dhaka East-West Elevated Expressway project will be built on Public Private Partnership (PPP) basis to reduce traffic congestion in Dhaka and adjacent areas.

The government on Wednesday approved a proposal in principle to implement the Tk 16,389 crore expressway project.

The approval came in the 34th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) held on Wednesday virtually with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Md Shamsul Arefin said that 12 companies showed their interest to be associated with this project.

Once the tender is floated, the bidders would be selected from the interested companies, he said.

The Dhaka East-West Elevated Expressway project will produce large number of employments and save working hours of city dwellers by reducing traffic congestions, Arefin said.

The project will also contribute to increase country’s GDP growth and trigger development of the capital and adjacent areas, he stated.

On September 12 in 2018, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced to implement five projects including the Dhaka East-West Elevated Expressway to ensure road safety and resolve traffic congestion in the capital.

After implementation of the project, transports from country’s south-western region will be able to travel directly at north-western parts and Chattogram, Sylhet without entering into the capital.

The route of the expressway will be Boliarpur(Savar) to Lalgalbandh of Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj via Keraniganj, Narayanganj Sadar and Bandar upazila.
