Bangladesh set to enter 5G era tomorrow

Bangladesh is set to enter the fifth-generation data service era on Sunday aiming to ensure the fastest network service to mobile phone users.

To mark the ‘Digital Bangladesh Day’ on December 12, state-owned mobile phone operator Teletalk Bangladesh Limited will roll out a 5G trial run in some parts of the country.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy, ICT advisor to the Prime Minister will inaugurate the launching ceremony.

Teletalk already got 60 Megahertz (MHz) 3.5 GHz band spectrum to roll out its 5G services on a trial basis.

“We have initially planned to launch the 5G network services in a few publicly important places such as Bangabhaban, Ganobhaban, Sangsad Bhaban, Prime Minister’s Office, Bangladesh Secretariat, and Dhanmondi 32,’’ said Posts and Telecommunications Division minister Mustafa Jabbar while talking to The Business Post.

He further explained as saying, “Apart from these important places, we are also trying to launch this technology in the two nationally important places such as Tungipara of Gopalganj and Shaheed Minar in the capital. The operation will be expanded further soon after the arrival of the required machinery to run the operation countrywide.”

With the launching of the 5G network services, the government eyes a technological upgrade across industrial, consumer, healthcare, and educational sectors in line with similar trends across the developed world.

“The 5G service would act as a catalyst for advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, IoT, robotics, blockchain, and so on,” the minister also noted.
