Booster dose jabbing starts after trial run

Bangladesh on Tuesday began administering booster doses of Covid-19 vaccine on a limited scale after an eight-day trial.

Starting at 10am, a few hospitals in the capital jabbed aged people with the third dose. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Kurmitola General Hospital, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, 250-bed TB Hospital in Shyamoli, Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Hospital, and Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital are among those that administered the jabs to the citizens aged above 60.

Director of the Directorate General of Health Services Shamsul Haq said Bangladesh was giving Pfizer vaccine as the booster dose. “People who registered in the Surokkha app and received two doses will get text messages to receive the booster dose. After that, they will get the jabs by showing their vaccine cards at the vaccination centres,” he said.

Shamsul said letters had been sent to all the hospitals, asking them to start administering the booster shots. “Those who are prepared will start administering the jabs from Tuesday while others will begin in a day or two.”

The government has been giving booster jabs experimentally since December 19.
