Legal notice seeks affordable airfare for migrants

A legal notice has been sent to six people, including the secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, asking them to take steps for making airfare affordable to Middle East-bound migrants.

Supreme Court lawyer Mohammad Shishir Manir sent the notice on Tuesday, on behalf of eight citizens of Kanaighat Upazila under the Sylhet district.

Other recipients of this legal notice are – secretary of the Ministry of Welfare and Expatriate, chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, director general of the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training, director general of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines, and president of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies.

Respondents must take necessary steps within the next eight days, or else a writ petition will be filed with the High Court against them, says the legal notice.

The notice says migrant workers sent $2,478 crore as a remittance in FY2020-21, but these people are not receiving an adequate level of welfare and protection from different government organisations.

Besides, airlines – including the Biman Bangladesh Airlines – have hiked airfares of Middle-East bound passengers three times so far. However, many seats of the Biman Bangladesh Airlines are remaining empty.

Migrants cannot go to their workplace due to the ticket price hikes. As a result, expatriates are expressing dissatisfaction, and its negative impact on the economy of Bangladesh is inevitable.
