LPG cylinder prices reduced further

The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has declined from Tk 102.32 per litre to Tk 96.18 per litre, effective from Monday, including the value-added tax.

Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced the new price at an online press conference on Monday.

While making the announcement, BERC Chairman Abdul Jalil said the price of retail LPG has witnessed a fall as the bulk LPG of Saudi contract price (CP) has declined globally.

As per the announcement, the prices for other quantities of the LPG will also go down in line with the new price at the same ratio. For the LPG cylinders of different sizes, the prices will be reduced by Tk 4.15 per litre.

On the other hand, the price of auto gas has also been reduced to Tk 54.94 for the month of January, which was Tk 57.24 last month.

Earlier, LPG per litre including VAT was reduced from Tk 109.42 to Tk 102.32 at the private level in December.

The price of a 12 litre cylinder has been reduced from Tk 1,313 to Tk 1,228.

According to the new decision, the price of centrally reticulated LPG in household has also been reduced. It has been reduced from Tk 99.08 per litre to Tk 94.94 per litre.

The authority said in the press briefing that according to the Saudi CP, propane and butane prices fell to $740 per tonne from $795 and $710 from $750 per tonne, respectively, in January. The new price is set for January, considering the propane-butane blending ratio is 35:65.

Aside from chairman, Secretary Abu Sayeed, Member Maqbool E Ilahi and other members were present at the press conference.

The BERC chairman said the price of the state-owned LP Gas Company’s LPG will remain unchanged as it has no relation with the global market price.

According to industry insiders, Saudi CP (Contract Price) is usually set at the end of each month to make it effective for the following

month.

Most Bangladeshi private companies import their bulk LPG from the Middle East on the basis of Saudi CP and market it locally.

Responding to a question, the BERC chairman said the Commission will take initiatives to install an electronic dashboard at retail LPG outlets to ensure the sale of the products at the proper rate to be fixed by the BERC.

The BERC for the first time fixed the retail-level LPG price on April 12 after holding a public hearing to comply with a High Court order.
