Khulna to get Novo Theater

The government is planning to construct a Novo Theater in Khulna to build a science-oriented society, particularly inspiring the younger generation of the region towards science.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has sent a proposal titled ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theater, Khulna’ to the Planning Commission seeking approval of the executive committee of the National Economic Council, a senior official of the Planning Ministry told The Business Post.

The cost of the project is estimated at Tk 553.84 crore which will come from the government exchequer. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theater, Dhaka will implement the project by March 2024, the official said.

The project will create an informal science entertainment centre and opportunities for space research and display of digital and scientific documentaries.

According to the project proposal, people will know about the development and advancement of science and technology in the country through the Novo Theater. The project will accelerate socio-economic development through the dissemination of knowledge about science and technology.

It is possible to make an important contribution to creating a science-oriented society by setting up ‘Novo Theater’ in every region of the country, the proposal said. Public, teachers and students should know about the space history and scientific discoveries impacting human society.

Novo Theater will play a vital role in developing non-formal education and scientific discovery-based entertainment opportunities, it added.

The main components of the project include land acquisition, procurement of machinery and equipment and construction materials for high-rise building construction.

Member of the Socio-Economic Infrastructure Division of the Planning Commission Mosammat Nasima Begum said the proposed project is important to create a science and technology-oriented younger generation.

Meanwhile, the Project Evaluation Committee held a meeting on the project on July 23, 2020, and cleared it for the ECNEC’s approval

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina directed officials to take initiative for the expansion of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theater at the divisional level after visiting the Ministry of Science and Technology in April 2014.
