BAB seeks time to implement BB directive

The Bangladesh Association of Banks (BAB) on Wednesday sought more time to implement the new salary structure set by the central bank for entry-level officers and staffs of private banks.

BAB Chairman Md Nazrul Islam Mazumder made the remark after a meeting with Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir at the central bank in Dhaka. Senior BB officials, chairmen of some banks and leaders from ABB were present in the meeting.

“The salary structure cannot be implemented from March 1. We’ll need more time. We have to discuss the issue further with the regulator, after which we may request BB to reconsider,” Islam said, noting that there were some gaps in the central bank circular. Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and spokesperson Md Serajul Islam said BAB had placed their demands and requested extending the deadline to implement the directive. The governor assured them of considering their demands.

The minimum entry-level salary for the bankers would be Tk 28,000 in the probation period and raised to Tk 39,000 after probation, according to the BB directive issued on January 20.

The central bank also set Tk 24,000 as minimum salaries and allowances for the support staff of banks.

In its notice, BB said that any bank official cannot be forced to resign without any specific and proven allegation and deposit mobilisation achievement target cannot be imposed for job security or salary rise.

The notice would be applicable from March 1 this year.
