Covid: Test positivity rate reaches record 33.37%

Bangladesh registered 15,440 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours till 8am on Friday while the daily infection rate rose to 33.37 per cent, a record high since the virus was first detected in the country in 2020.

The country also logged 20 more deaths over the same period, pushing up the tally to 28,308.

Of the eight divisions, Dhaka recorded the highest number of cases with 9,226 infections while Chattogram topped the death count with nine fatalities, with the port city witnessing deterioration in the Covid-19 situation.

Besides, five died in Dhaka, two each in Rajshahi and Sylhet, and one each in Barishal and Mymensingh.

On Thursday, the positivity rate stood at 31.98 per cent.

Previously, the daily case positivity rate reached its peak at 32.55 per cent on July 24 last year.

With the fresh infections, the number of total cases reached 17,62,771, according to the daily update from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The health authorities reported the latest figures after testing 46,268 samples at 865 laboratories across the country. Bangladesh has so far tested 1,23,56,945 samples.

Meanwhile, 1,326 patients recovered from the deadly infection in the last 24 hours, raising the overall number of recovery to 15,62,369. The latest figures put the recovery rate at 88.63 per cent and the mortality rate at 1.61 per cent.

Bangladesh reported its first cases on March 8 in 2020 and the first coronavirus-related death on March 18 the same year. The test positivity rate has been witnessing an upward trend since the beginning of 2022, rising from 2.43 per cent on January 1.

Globally, over 366.58 million people have been infected with the novel coronavirus and 5.63 million have died, according to the tally of Johns Hopkins University.
