The cost of a link road, to transport materials for constructing the Matarbari Coal Fired Power Plant and a 400KV transmission line from Matarbari to Anwara upazila, will go up by Tk 367 crore – an increase of nearly 53 per cent.
In this regard, the road transport and bridges ministry already sent a proposal titled “Construction of Matarbari Coal Fired Power Plant Project (RHD Part) (2nd Revision)” to the Planning Commission for Executive Committee of the National Economic Council’s approval.
That ministry has also sought four more years for completing this project, said a senior official of the planning ministry, adding that the cost and tenure have increased due to the inclusion of new sectors, changes in design, and an increase in the lengths of sectors and a bridge.
The current project cost is estimated at Tk 1026.83 crore, which will be implemented by June 2024. Tk 791 crore will come from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Tk 235 crore will come from the government exchequer.
After the first revision of the project, the cost was estimated at Tk 659.97 crore, and it was supposed to be implemented by June 2020. The project cost was initially estimated at Tk 602 crore, which was approved by the ECNEC on October 13, 2015.
On the matter, Member of the Physical Infrastructure Division under the Planning Commission Mamun Al Rashid said, “We have held a project evaluation committee (PEC) meeting regarding this project on January 31.
“We have cleared the revision and sent a proposal to the ECNEC for final approval. The Planning Commission later sent the proposal to the Economic Relations Division, who then forwarded it to JICA, seeking their consent regarding the additional funds.”
He, however, added that JICA has yet to respond on the matter.
