Modern waste management system of DSCC on the cards

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will purchase latest equipment, machinery and vehicles as part of its modernisation of waste management system to ensure civic amenities for the city dwellers.

The move aims to reduce illegal occupation of roads and footpaths to 70 per cent from 40 per cent, and remove construction debris to 80 per cent from 50 per cent.

With the help of the procurement project, the city authority will mitigate traffic congestion and prevent road accident through road repairs quickly.

The project eyes road upgradation, fixing street light, beautification to 70 per cent from 40 per cent and building a modern parking garage for maintenance of 500 vehicles.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) is likely to approve the project titled “Disposal of waste removal and management in DSCC-affiliated areas, procurement of modern vehicles for road repairs and reduction in traffic congestion through installation of mechanised parking” along with nine other projects today (Tuesday), a senior official of the Planning Ministry told The Business Post.

The cost of project is estimated at Tk 333.32 crore, of which a Tk 299.99 crore will come from the government exchequer and Tk 33.33 crore from the DSCC’s own fund.

The south city corporation will implement the project by June 2024.

The city authority provides various services across the capital including road repair and development, traffic management, waste management, street lighting, urban development, public health services and sanitation.

The amount of waste generated in Dhaka city in 2004 was 3,200 metric tonnes per day while it was about 3,909 metric tonnes in 2010, and in 2015 it was 4,624 metric tonnes.

The amount of household waste produced per capita is 0.34 kilogramme per day while the total amount of street waste and commercial waste generated daily is 0.56kg per person per day during the period.

Now the amount of waste generated per capita per day has increased to 0.78kg, and currently DSCC collects about 4,500 metric tonnes of waste.

The main components of the project include purchasing 20 hydraulic ladders, five excavator chain mounted supplies, and five chain dozers.

In addition, five backhoe loaders, 10 two-wheeled road rollers, five three-wheeled road rollers, five mobile toilets (VIP), five mobile toilets (general), three new model zips with BRTA registration fee and five new model double cabin pickups with BRTA registration fee would be purchased.

Another four police protection trucks, five new model magistrate carrying microbuses with BRTA registration fee, five pay loaders, three tire dozers, a low-bed trailer, two wheel-mounted excavators and 10 water vehicles with three BRTA registration fees will also be procured.
