EC search panel discloses list of proposed names

The Search Committee for proposing names to appoint Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners for the next Election Commission revealed the list of all proposed names on Monday.

The Cabinet Division’s Government Formation & Protocol branch disclosed the list. There were 322 names in it.

Disclosure of such kind is unprecedented, as previous search committees, formed in 2012 and 2017, did not make such a move.

Justice Obaidul Hassan, the search panel chief informed of the decision to disclose the list of all proposed names on Sunday, during the committee’s third meeting with eminent citizens.

According to the search committee officials, a total of 24 registered political parties, including the ruling Awami League, have submitted 329 names proposing for the posts of CEC and ECs for the next EC.

Earlier, the search committee issued letters to the registered political parties seeking names by 5:00pm Friday (February 11) for constituting new Election Commission comprising chief election commissioner and other commissioners.

On February 5, President Abdul Hamid formed the six-member search committee to constitute the Election Commission (EC) as per the ‘Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act 2022’ for conducting the next general elections.

The tenure of the current EC will expire on Monday.
