The Directorate General of Health Services will close administering the Covid-19 first dose vaccines on February 26.

Health Services DG ABM Khurshid Alam said this in a virtual briefing on Tuesday. Before closing the inoculation, 10 million people will be vaccinated on the closing day.

Bangladesh started vaccination against Coronavirus in February 2021 nearly a year after the country first detected the virus. On March 8, 2020, the country recorded first infection and 10 days after the detection recorded the first death.

“We will administer the highest number of doses on the last day,” said ABM Khurshid Alam. Mentioning that the death rate of vaccinated people is lower, he urged all to get vaccinated on that day. In Bangladesh, over 100 million people have received the first dose of coronavirus vaccine, 71 million people received two doses and 2.7 million got booster doses till Monday.

Bangladesh set a target to vaccinate 70 per cent of its 170 million people following the standard of World Health Organisation.

So far 84.4 per cent of target population set by the WHO has been vaccinated with the first dose till Monday as per the data from the DGHS website. Meanwhile, 58.95 per cent has received two doses of the vaccine.

Bangladesh is now vaccinating citizens aged above 12 years old. During several mass vaccination campaigns the health department administered vaccine among the villagers and slum people.

They also administered over 14.5 million students with first dose and nearly 5.9 million with second dose of Covid-19 vaccine.

Over 26,000 street people also were given first dose of vaccine.

Bangladesh approved eight Covid-19 vaccines on emergency use. The vaccines are Covishield of Oxford AstraZeneca, Sinopharm and Sinovac of China, Moderna and Pfizer of USA, Sputnik V of Russia, Johnson and Johnson Belgium (Only single dose vaccine) and AstraZeneca- Sweden.

Of them, Bangladesh is administrating six vaccines — AstraZeneca, Phizer, Sinopharm, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson and Sinovac.
