Dhaka world’s noisiest city: UN

Dhaka has been ranked as the world’s noisiest city in a recent report published by UN titled “Frontiers 2022: Noise, Blazes and Mismatches”.

According to the report, the capital of Bangladesh is followed by India’s Moradabad and Pakistan’s Islamabad.

According to World Health Organisation’s guidelines, the report says, the permissible noise level limits are 55 dB (decibels) for outdoor residential areas and 70 dB for commercial areas, and where there’s traffic.

In Dhaka, the noise levels have been found to be 119 db, Rajshahi 103 db and Tangail 75 db.

Two other Bangladeshi cities are also on the list-Tangail and Rajshahi. The two cities respectively ranked 12 and 4 in the list.

Several cities from South Asian countries are also on the list.

Indian cities- Ansarsol, Kolkata, Delhi and Jaipur ranked 5, 6, 9, 10th on the list successively. Karachi ranked 8th on the list while Kupondole of Nepal ranked 5th and Sri Lankan capital Colombo stood 9th on the list.

“Exposure to environmental noise sources such as road traffic, air traffic, railways, machinery, industry and recreational activities have well-documented negative impacts on physical and mental well-being”, said the report.
