‘Bibiyana production almost fully resumes’

Production at the Bibiyana gas field is running almost at full capacity following a four-day emergency maintenance work that disrupted supply to households and industries in some parts of the country.

Making the announcement on Wednesday in a press release, the Ministry of Power Energy and Mineral Resource said a sudden supply shortage at the Bibiyana gas field had caused low gas pressure in parts of Bangladesh from the first day of Ramadan.

“However, we have begun to overcome this crisis as the field is producing 1,100mmcf gas per day, thanks to the tireless work of our experienced engineers,” the release read.

It added that an additional 70mmcf gas will be added to the national grid, and a cargo of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) will arrive by Thursday.

Petrobangla data shows that the Bibiyana gas field supplied 1,100mmcf gas on Wednesday, and the total supply to the national grid was 2,713mmcf.

Petrobangla’s Chairman Nazmul Ahsan said it would not have been possible to bring the wells back online without a quick response.

He further said, “After the unintentional closure of the wells during maintenance work, we took prompt action and sent a three-member committee to the spot. Field operator Chevron also worked hard to fix the problem.

“Therefore, we were able to bring a well back online within the first day of the incident. Out of the six wells, four have already resumed production and one will do so by tomorrow. However, the remaining one well will take a few days to fix.”
