MCCI for 3-5 year licence validity to ease business

Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) President Md Saiful Islam has demanded trade and environment-related licences be issued for three to five years to enhance the ease of doing business.

He made the call while addressing a seminar on the one stop service (OSS) platform of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) at the MCCI Gulshan office in the capital on Wednesday.

“In the current context, we only have one-year licences available. This hampers the ease of doing business,” said Saiful.

He also proposed outsourcing the services of regulatory body inspectors to ensure the overall quality and speed of inspections.

BIDA Executive Chairman Sirazul Islam emphasised digitisation as well as its significance in making business and investment easier and faster.

He said most of the services offered by the OSS platform were of BIDA and not of other agencies. He also encouraged the private sector to seek all OSS services and utilise the platform’s conveniences.

BIDA Director Jibon Krishna Saha Roy explained how businesses could take advantage of the OSS platform. He said OSS currently offers 58 services of 19 organisations or agencies.

BIDA introduced OSS in 2018 to provide essential investment facilitation services. The platform focuses on providing several regulatory, compliance, and value-added services through a single window. It aims to become the point of contact between the government and investors for investment-related services.

An open discussion was held during the seminar where questions were raised about sector-specific registrations, declarations of local and foreign sales levels, unit-wise registrations of companies, and facilitating trade and environment-related licences.

BIDA officials said local and foreign sales levels could be amended later as per the companies’ requirements.

Others attending the programme were MCCI Senior Vice-President Kamran T Rahman; board members Syed Tareque Md Ali, Uzma Chowdhury, Rubaiyat Jamil, and Golam Mainuddin; and Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer Farooq Ahmed.

The event ended with a vote of thanks from Kamran.
