Gas crisis to end today, hopes Petrobangla

State-run natural resource company Petrobangla has expressed hope the ongoing gas crisis in the country will soon come to an end as production in Bibiyana gas field in Sylhet has resumed.

With the resumption of production, the country’s total gas supply rose by another 70 million cubic feet and Petrobangla hopes it will be able to supply 450 mmcfd to 500 mmcfd gas from Thursday 9 pm onwards. At the same time, another LNG-loaded cargo has reached Maheshkhali terminal.

Last Sunday, the country faced nationwide gas shortage after a well at Bibiyana gas field in Sylhet got clogged by sand, which resulted in halting production at six wells at the gas field.

Currently, gas production in 5 out of 6 respective wells was resumed successfully.

Bibiyana has 26 wells with a total production capacity of 1,200 mmmcfd.

Talking to The Business Post, energy experts said that Petrobangla could not instantly solve its current deficit of 450 mmcfd as it had no LNG in its reserves.

The recent gas crisis not only affected the residential and industrial supply, but also hit CNG-filling stations hard in the last two days.
