A Dhaka court on Saturday placed BNP leader Advocate Mokbul Hossen on a three-day remand on charges of obstructing police in performing duties during the student-trader clash in the city’s New Market area on April 18.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid passed the order after police produced Mokbul before the court. New Market police station Inspector Halder Arpit Thakur filed an appeal to the court to place him on a seven-day remand.
Mokbul was arrested by Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police at his Dhanmondi residence on Friday.
He was taken to the DB headquarters in the capital’s Minto Road for interrogation. Later, he was taken to New Market police station.
On April 18 night, a clash ensued between students of Dhaka College and traders in the New Market area.
Later, it was discovered that a fight between two workers of ‘Welcome’ and ‘Capital’ fast food shops of New Market induced the clash. Both the fast food shops have been allotted to the BNP leader Mokbul Hossen. He rented the shops to two individuals — Rafiqul Islam and Shahidul Islam.
