Ex-Delta Life administrator lands in jail

A Dhaka court has sent Sultan-ul-Abedine Molla, the former administrator of Delta Life Insurance, to jail after rejecting his bail plea in a case filed over a mask procurement scandal.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Bakar Siddique on Monday also issued arrest warrants for three other accused after they did not appear before the court in the fraud case, said lawyer Md Ramzan Ali Sardar.

The three are the company’s Deputy Managing Director Md Manzure Mawla and Executive Vice-Presidents Md Kamarul Haque and M Hafizur Rahman Khan.

According to case details, Sultan, a former member of the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority, skirted the mandatory tendering process while buying facemasks worth Tk 1.07 crore.

Mawla, Kamrul and Hafizur were involved in the procurement fraud as they approved the purchase as well, according to plaintiff Zeyad Rahman, the director of Delta’s

suspended board.

He alleged that only 19,000 of the 2.15 lakh masks procured at Tk50 each in May 2021 from Lazim Media, a third party vendor allegedly run by a relative of Sultan, were distributed in the company’s zonal offices while the remaining masks vanished.
