PK Halder remanded again in Kolkata

An Indian court on Friday placed Bangladeshi businessman Prashanta Kumar Halder alias PK Halder and five others on an 11-day remand afresh in a case filed under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Judge Sauvik Ghosh of Calcutta special judge’s court passed the order as the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) produced them before the court amid tight security on completion of their 10-day remand in the case, according to media reports.

The India’s economic intelligence agency, however, sought 14 days afresh to interrogate the six accused under its custody.

The court also ordered the directorate to produce the accused before it on June 7 again on completion of their interrogation.

The Indian court placed Halder and others on a total of 14 days’ remand in two phases, after their arrest in mid-May, following the petitions submitted by the ED.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission Commissioner Md Mozammel Haque Khan said on Friday that PK Halder will be tried in both India and Bangladesh courts for his involvement in money laundering.

He also said they are carrying out all-out efforts to bring back Halder in Bangladesh. He said, “If PK Halder can be brought back to the country and interrogated through the court order, we will get more information which will help in disposing of the cases filed against him and his associates.”

Earlier, PK Halder, who fled Bangladesh in 2019, was arrested along with his five associates in West Bengal on May 14.

Halder, a former managing director of the erstwhile NRB Global Bank, now Global Islami Bank, had been on the run since being charged by the ACC for money laundering and amassing ill-gotten wealth.

He settled in Ashoknagar of North 24 Parganas, posing as an Indian national under the name of Shibshankar Halder and acquired real estate properties in West Bengal and introduced himself as a real estate promoter and financial expert, according to the ED. ACC officials said Halder and his associates had allegedly embezzled over Tk 10,000 crore after receiving loans from various non-banking financial institutions in the name of companies owned by him and his family members.
