Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar has said the country will get 13,200 Gbps of bandwidth once it is connected to the third submarine cable SEA-ME-WE-6.
Mentioning the government has taken initiatives to issue submarine cable licences to the private sector, he said Saudi Arabia was currently taking 600 Gbps of bandwidth from Bangladesh.
He made the remarks at a programme titled “Digital Technologies for older persons and Healthy Ageing” in the capital’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Sunday. It was arranged to mark the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
Bangladesh would not face any bandwidth crisis when it would hopefully be connected to the third submarine cable in 2025, Jabbar said.
“Our responsibility is to ensure digital connectivity across the country, but only the spectrum will not be enough for that. We must be connected to fibre optic.”
The government had already taken initiatives to expand the underground fibre optic cable network, the minister said.
He urged telecom operators to ensure 4G services and hoped to introduce the 5G network where necessary and then expand gradually.
Earlier in the day, he inaugurated a roadshow on the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) premises organised to mark the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. BTRC Chairman Shyam Sundar Sikder, Secretary of the Posts and Telecommunications Division Md Khalilur Rahman, senior BTRC officials, and representatives of various organisations were present at the programme.
