WB to provide Tk 255cr in food assistance for Rohingyas

State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Enamur Rahman on Sunday said the World Bank will provide Tk 255 crore in food assistance for the Rohingya people in Cox’s Bazar.

The state minister told this to reporters after signing an agreement between the ministry and the World Food Programme (WFP) at the Secretariat in Dhaka, the ministry said in a press release.

Secretary to the ministry Md Kamrul Hasan and WFP Country Director for Bangladesh Jane Pearce inked the agreement on behalf of their organisations.

Under the agreement, Enamur said, the WFP will provide food assistance to Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar through the Safety Net System for the Poorest Project, which is being funded by the World Bank.

The project will provide nutrition education to women and assistance to children under the age of five in health centres, he said. It will also provide training and necessary equipment for gardening, tree plantation and try to protect both trees and mountain slopes, the state

minister said. He mentioned that the project is expected to reduce anti-social crimes and increase awareness among the Rohingya people.
