The government has restricted riding motorcycles on the Padma Bridge from 6:00am on Monday till further notice.

The Bridges Division issued a notice in this regard on Sunday night without citing any reasons.

However, the ban comes after two people sustained injuries in an accident between two motorbikes at night on the bridge.

A video spread on social media showed that the injured were lying in a pool of blood while the authorities were preparing to take them to the hospital.

Padma Bridge north police station Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Hossain said they were informed about the incident and trying to identify the injured people.

Hundreds of motorbikes plied the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway since morning after the bridge was opened. Many of the motorcyclists were driving carelessly without wearing helmets.

Even a motorcyclist was fined Tk 100 by a mobile court for not wearing his helmet.

In the first eight hours after opening the bridge for traffic, as many as 15,200 vehicles used it while 60 per cent of those were motorcycles, according to the Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA).
