A Dhaka court on Thursday rejected the bail petition of four members of the North South University’s (NSU) trustee board in a case filed on charges of embezzling Tk 304 crore.
The four accused are – MA Kashem, Benajir Ahmed, Rehana Rahman and Mohammed Shajahan. Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the order after a hearing on their bail petition.
On May 23, the court had sent these four accused to jail after Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Farid Ahmed Patwary produced them before it with a plea to interrogate them in the case.
Following the plea, the court allowed the ACC to interrogate them at the jail gate for a day within seven working days. On May 22, the High Court handed over the four accused to the Shahbagh police after denying their anticipatory bail prayers in the case.
The ACC on May 5 filed a case against six individuals, including the four arrested trustee members. The two others accused are the NSU Board of Trustee Chairman Azim Uddin Ahmed and Ashaloy Housing and Developers Ltd Managing Director Amin Md Hilaly.
There are allegations that the university trust had paid Tk 500 crore to Ashaloy Housing and Developers Ltd for purchasing a 250-acre land, which was actually bought at Tk 200 crore in 2016.
The trustees later embezzled the additional amount of Tk 300 crore in connivance with the housing company, according to the case filed by the ACC on May 5. The land was purchased for extension of the NSU campus, bypassing the approval of the university syndicate, the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Ministry of Education.
