One password blocking all Evaly data

The Evaly board formed by the High Court is at an impasse as the unavailability of the password of the company’s server has left it without access to all the information on the controversial e-commerce entity’s customers and creditors.

The assets and resources the company has right now are also not enough to pay back the customers and creditors, said the board members at a press conference at the company’s office in Dhaka on Friday.

While the board thinks that Evaly’s comeback depends on acquiring more investment and retrieval of the server password, the customers think the rebound highly depends on the release of its former CEO Mohammad Rassel, who was arrested in September last year.

Board Chairman and former Appellate Division Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury told the press briefing that they have found 4,395 items, including cars, laptops and mobile phones, at two Evaly warehouses in Savar.

Their approximate market value is Tk 25 crore, which is very little against Evaly’s liabilities of over Tk 1,000 crore.

However, that amount is not enough to pay the dues as the number of customers, creditors and merchants, which the board is yet to find out, is huge, said Justice Chowdhury.

The board members said their work was stuck as they could not get the server password from Rassel despite several attempts. “Rassel says he has forgotten the password and he had written it in a diary. We are yet to find the diary.

“If we can find the password, we will be able to tell the real scenario of customers and creditors.”

Justice Chowdhury also said that they will publish their audit report in the last week of June.

Asked how they were auditing if they did not have enough data, he said they were making do with the documents and banking statements that were left in Evaly’s Dhanmondi office.

“But if we find the Evaly server password, it will be very easy to analyse the overall data and come to a proper conclusion,” he added.

Justice Chowdhury also stressed that it would not be possible to run Evaly and pay back the dues if new investors do not come forward.

Evaly board’s Managing Director and Additional Secretary Md Mahbub Kabir and board members chartered accountant Fakhruddin Ahmed and Barrister Khan Mohammad Shameem Aziz were also present at the press conference.

Meanwhile, a massive crowd of Evaly customers and creditors was seen waiting outside the company’s office during the media briefing.

They also demonstrated there, demanding Rassel’s release. They said the board was failing to run Evaly and only Rassel, once freed, would be able to clear the company’s dues and take it back to its glory days.

Recently, Rassel and his wife Shamima Nasrin, the Evaly chairman who is currently out on bail, had informed the High Court that they would find investors to clear the clients’ debt.

The couple was arrested in Dhaka in September last year after a customer filed a case against them with Gulshan police over fraud and embezzlement charges.
