A record number of Bangladeshi bank cardholders’ information has been found on the dark web, according to a report.
The credentials of 46.03 per cent of classic cards and 89.54 per cent of visa cards have been leaked, the report said.
This information was revealed in the recently published ‘Sectoral cyber threat intelligence for banking industries’ report of the Bangladesh Government’s e-Government Computer Incident Response Team (BGD e-GOV CIRT).
As a result, the country’s debit and credit card holders may fall prey to hackers at any moment, added the report.
BGD e-GOV CIRT, the organization that looks after the cyber issues of the government, has already announced that it will stand by the banks on this issue.
In the meantime, the agency has advised users to be more careful in protecting their personal information, as well as to strengthen passwords, turn on two-factor authentication and avoid suspicious links and calls.
After reviewing the information leaked on the dark web, CIRT found that many cards had weak passwords.
“As a result, criminals can easily control the weak points of these networks remotely,” Tarique M Barkatullah, project director of BGD e-GOV CIRT, told a leading Bangla daily.
The report reveals that banks and other financial institutions have always been a focal point for cybercriminals. And CIRT continuously monitors those cyber attackers’ movements.
The Cyber Threat Intelligence Unit said that a “potential attack vector” has been found both in government and private banks, through which hackers can easily control those banks’ information through their weak points.
