The price of rice may increase by Tk 0.5 for minimizing the transportation cost due to hike in fuel oil prices. But the traders increased it up to Tk 4 per kg. Similarly, the prices of other products have also increased, said Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Wednesday.
One of the reasons for the recent hike in commodity prices is that a class of unscrupulous traders is taking advantage of the fuel oil price hike. The minister came up with remarks in response to questions from journalists at a press briefing on Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) report at conference room of the Commerce Ministry in Dhaka. The government is trying to control the price of products. But it must be remembered that it is not possible to bring the prices under control overnight, he added.
He hoped that the price will be affordable by October. About import of eggs is being discussed. Regarding the proposal of traders to increase the price of edible oil by Tk 20 per litre, the Commerce Minister said there has been a proposal to increase the price of edible oil. But not decided yet.
The price of oil will be adjusted by analyzing the price of oil in the global market and the dollar price, he furthered.
Taking into consideration the commodity price situation, it has been decided to continue the activities of Trading Corporation Bangladesh (TCB). Products will be delivered regularly every month from now on, the minister added.
In the press conference, the commerce minister also said that the complaint made by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), regarding the sale of TCB products, is not appropriate. TIB made baseless allegations based on a very small sample. The study did not reveal the correct information, he termed.
Mentionable, a study published by TIB on 11 August said that 39 per cent of people have not received family cards. 80 per cent of the respondents said that they could not be included in the list due to irregularities and corruption.
Commerce Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh, TCB Chairman Brig General Md Ariful Hassan, Director General of Consumer Rights Protection Directorate AHM Shafiquzzaman attended the press meet.
