Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said that as the factories under Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) produce enough urea fertiliser for the country’s needs and imports from abroad as well, at present there is no shortage of urea fertiliser in the country.

He made the remarks on Friday while talking to journalists after paying homage at the tomb of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and unveiling a plaque of a buffer godown for fertiliser, which is being constructed by BCIC at Ghonapara in Gopalganj Sadar upazila.

Mentioning the importance of the use of urea fertiliser in increasing agricultural production, the minister said “The country currently has a demand of at least 2.5 million tonnes of urea fertiliser per year. At least 60 per cent to 70 per cent of the fertiliser has to be imported from abroad to meet the demand.”

Humayun said the imported fertilisers are supplied to the rural farmers through 25 buffer godowns of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation, which are located in different districts.

He said the Gopalganj fertiliser godown with the capacity of 10,000 tonnes is being implemented at the cost of some 34 crores. The physical progress of the warehouse is 40 per cent.

The minister directed the project authority to complete the project soon.

“A total of 47 buffer godowns are being constructed in different districts of the country under two projects for convenient storage and distribution facilities of Ministry of Industry.

“The capacity of each buffer godown is 10,000 tonnes, so it will be possible to store a total of around five lakh tonnes of fertiliser when construction of all buffer godowns is completed.”
