Mismanagement of commerce ministry causes harassment, violence

The festive mood of the much-awaited elections of the Bangladesh Association of International Recruiting Agencies (BAIRA) turned into a nightmare due to the mismanagement of the organisers appointed by the Ministry of Commerce.

Although the vote casting was finished by 4:00pm, the election commission could not start the ballot counting till 5:45pm.

The voters alleged that the election organisers intentionally took much time to complete the count. However, the vote counting was begun around 6:30pm.

During an era of digitisation, the chief of the election commission Mirazul Islam Ukil opted manual process and thus brought harassment for not only the voters but also the aspirants.

In the election, some 181 candidates took the battle for 27 spots in the executive committee of the association. Some 969 voters out of 1,042 cast their votes.

It was the mismanagement of the election commission which turned the festive environment into a violent scenario.

However, prompt action taken by the law enforcement agencies brought the situation under control, according to the eyewitnesses.

Later, police took an election commission member, who was caught red-handed by the members of BAIRA Sammilita Oikya Parishad while tempering a ballot, under their custody.

However, this correspondent could not confirm the identity of the individual while police officials denied making any comment in this regard.

When contacted, election commission chief Mirazul Islam said the alleged official of the electoral team did not commit any crime. “Police took him under observation for his protection,” he added.

The official, however, denied making any comment on the ballot counting procedure.
