DNCC seeks Tk14.35cr more in funding

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has sought Tk 14.35 crore funding to install 1,913 more LED (light emitting diodes) lights under its ongoing LED installation project, according to a letter sent to the planning ministry by the local government division.

Besides, according to the letter, the DNCC wants to extend the period of the ongoing project of installing 42,450 LED lights. The corporation could not install the lights at some places in time due to the ongoing construction of MRT Line-6, CCTV installation and the delay in handing over some areas to DNCC.

Sources concerned said the project to install 42,450 LED lights on different alleys and roads under the city corporation area started in 2017 and was scheduled to be completed by 2021.

But due to the ongoing development projects of other organisations on the city roads and the CCTV installation project of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, all the LEDs could not be installed in due time. Now a new package has been added to it, for which the number of LEDs has been increased by 1,913, according to the sources.

DNCC sources said it took time to revise the entire plan after removing the CCTV camera component from the project. Due to this implementation of the project has been delayed.

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Salim Reza said, “The total area of DNCC area is 82.638 square km. It is divided into five administrative zones. Various roads under DNCC currently have different types of road lamps and tube lights, operated manually by linemen or switchmen. But the LED lights will be controlled through the control room.”

“The old lamps require more electricity and cost more money to maintain. Moreover, excessive carbon dioxide emissions from these lights pollute the environment. In this context, the project was adopted to install energy efficient and modern LED street lights of various watts for the easy and safe movement of traffic and pedestrians,” he addeed.

According to the revised development project proposal (DPP), the project cost is Tk 369.14 crore. The government is providing Tk 295.75 crore and the rest is DNCC’s own funding. Now, the corporation is seeking additional Tk 14.35 crore funding for the installation of 1,913 more lights, said sources involved in the project.

Sources said the first LED lights in Dhaka were installed on the roads of Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara areas. However, gradually these lights are being installed from Abul Hotel in Pragati Sarani to Jamuna Future Park, from in front of SAARC Fountain to Mohakhali via Jahangir Gate and different other roads of the capital including Bijoy Sarani and Manik Mia Avenue.

The first LED lights were imported from Germany. Now, attempts are on to import the rest of the lamps from other European countries or the USA.
