The police on Friday charged batons in the capital’s Shahbagh to disperse a group of protesters who demanded the age limit for government job seekers be increased to 35 years.
The protesters blocked the road in Shahbagh under the banner of “Job-seeking Young Generation”. They demanded the government increase the age limit as per the election manifesto.
The blockade disrupted the movement of vehicles and caused long traffic jams.
About half an hour later, the police, led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ramna zone Haroon Or Rashid, dispersed the protesters by charging batons.
About 10 protesters were injured and were later given first aid at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station Maudoot Howladar said the protesters were removed for safety reasons and there were no casualties.
Another protester, Azim from Govt. Titumir College, said, “We were peacefully carrying out our program. Around 5.30 pm police attacked us, leaving at least 20 to 25 of our protesters injured.”
“Police also detained one of us, Tanjir, without any allegation,” he added.
Moudut Hawlader, officer in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh police station, said, “We just asked them to leave the road as they blocked the busy intersection causing traffic congestion.”
Protesting police attack on the program, Tanbir, one of the conveners of today’s programme said, “We are not leaving this place without Tanjir.”
Meanwhile, the protesters were observing a sit-in programme in front of Bangladesh National Museum demanding the release of Tanjir.
