A global survey has revealed that businesses in the Asia Pacific and Japan (APJ) have increased their budgets for cybersecurity in 2022 and are spending a higher percentage of technology budgets on cybersecurity.
Sophos, a UK-based IT security company, recently released the survey findings in a report titled “The Future of Cybersecurity in the Asia Pacific and Japan 2022”. The survey was conducted in collaboration with Tech Research Asia (TRA).
Organisations in the Asia Pacific and Japan dedicated around 11 per cent of their technology budgets to cybersecurity in 2022, which was 8.6 per cent more than the previous year, according to the survey.
Almost half of the respondents (49 per cent) said they were planning to make changes in the next six months as they had experienced an attack, highlighting the current reactive approach organisations take to manage security.
Besides, 45 per cent of the companies said they had not changed their information or cybersecurity approach in the last 12 months.
The driving factor behind a change in security strategy is an attack or breach, leading to an ‘attack, change, attack, change’ cycle, a trend observed since 2019.
Sophos in its State of Ransomware report in 2021 revealed that 72 per cent of APJ organisations were hit by ransomware that year, up from 39 per cent in 2020.
It said important organisations review their cybersecurity strategies regularly and address the gaps.
