Bangladesh women’s national team footballers Krishna Rani Sarkar, Sumsunnahar Sr, and Sanjida Akhter were compensated on Saturday by the Bangladesh Football Federation after they reported missing cash on the day they arrived from Nepal after winning the SAFF Championship 2022 title.
Chairman of BFF’s Women’s Wing Committee, Mahfuza Akhter Kiron, came out with the players at the BFF office in Motijheel and announced the compensation on behalf of BFF President Kazi Salahuddin and her.
Sumsunnahar Sr, who lost $400, was given Tk1 lakh, which was Tk 60,000 more than the lost equivalent. USD 900 and Tk50,000 ($400 of which belonged to Sanjida) went missing from Krishna’s luggage. She was given Tk1.5 lakh as compensation.
After losing her share of the prize money, Sanjida revealed that she was saving that money to buy an iPhone. BFF didn’t disappoint the winger as they gave her an iPhone 13 pro max.
“We got more than what we lost. For that, I would like to thank Salahuddin sir. He told us not to worry and said he would give us the money. We are happy,” Sumsunnahar Sr said after receiving her compensation.
Krishna, who said that she was saving the money to buy a gold necklace for her mother, was delighted after receiving the money as it would allow her to get that necklace for her mother.
“I would like to thank Salahuddin sir and Kiron Apa because I’ve got my money because of them. Sir said he would personally give us the money, and he has done it,” she said on Saturday.
“I will go to the shop today and buy the necklace for my mother,” she added.
“I am very happy. It was my dream to buy an iPhone with my share of the prize money. Now I’ve got it. I would like to thank Salahuddin Sir. We got three times the amount we lost. We are very happy,” she said after getting the iPhone.
Salahuddin had assured the female footballers that he would compensate them if the missing cash couldn’t be retrieved.
The airport authorities failed to find any discrepancies as they couldn’t find conclusive evidence from the CCTV footage.
On being asked if BFF got an explanation for the robbery, Kiron said that the airport authority failed to find anything and the BFF wanted to leave it.
“Airport authorities couldn’t find the missing cash. Nothing was found from the CCTV footage. We don’t want to take it any further,” she said.
