Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder on Saturday said at least five per cent of rice is wasted upon polishing and the nutrients get lost after the process.

“According to research, five tonnes of rice are wasted after polishing 100 tonnes of rice. All of which are part of the nutrition of rice,” he said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the ‘International Nutrition Olympiad 2022’ at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) in Dhaka.

“A quarter of traders polishes rice and markets those and thus the nutritional part of the rice gets lost and wasted,” he said.

“We have to keep in mind that polished rice does not contain nutrients. People will suffer from malnutrition if there is a lack of nutrition in the rice they eat to survive.”

The Ministry of Food is working to ensure access to safe and nutritious food for all citizens of the country, he added.
