The government will import 1,00,000 lakh tonnes of sugar soon to control the price hike, said the Bangladesh Bank on Sunday.
There is no shortage in sugar supply this year compared to last year, the central bank said in a notice issued a notice on the day, adding that the sugar market can be stabilised through proper monitoring.
Meanwhile, AHM Shafiquzzaman, director general of the Directorate of National Consumer Right Protection, on Sunday said the sugar market will return to normalcy in a day or two.
Sugar prices have increased in recent days amid a supply crunch.
Industry insiders said the shortage of dollars and complexities in opening Letters of Credit (LCs) may cause import shortages in the upcoming days, further adding to the sugar scarcity.
