The University of Dhaka (DU) and the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) are the only two universities to be featured in the QS Sustainability Rankings 2023.
Out of a total 700 institutions placed in the rankings, DU ranked in the 551-600 brackets while BUET was ranked in the 601+ bracket, according to the new list published on Wednesday by QS, an organisation that evaluates the ranking of universities worldwide.
However, the ranking, titled ‘QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2023’, did not reveal the position of the universities placed lower than the 601th position.
The list is curated by QS as part of their suite of yearly rankings that gives students an idea of how sustainable an institution is. The rankings are done based on two impact factors – environmental and social.
The Environmental Impact covers three areas – sustainable institutions, sustainable education, and sustainable research. On the other hand, the Social Impact covers five areas – equality, knowledge exchange, impact of education, employability & opportunities, and life quality.
The two Bangladeshi universities scored poorly across almost all metrics, with DU scoring 2 out of 100 in sustainable research and BUET scoring 7.8 out of 100 in sustainable
institutions. However, both universities fared better in the knowledge exchange factor, with DU getting 78.6 and BUET getting 58.1.
According to the latest QS ranking, the top 10 sustainable universities in the world are: University of California, Berkeley (UCB); University of Toronto; University of British Columbia; University of Edinburgh; University of New South Wales; University of Sydney; University of Tokyo; University of Pennsylvania; Yale University and University of Auckland.
