The government is set to procure 2.20 crore litres of soybean oil and 80,00 tonnes of fertiliser to ease the pressure on low wage earners and farmers.

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase (CCGP) approved multiple proposals in this regard on Wednesday at its 36th meeting of the year presided over by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.

The soybean oil will be purchased from local suppliers for the open market sale (OMS) programme of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), Cabinet Division Additional Secretary Sayeed Mahbub Khan briefed journalists after the meeting.

He said a total of six proposals were approved in the meeting.

He said the state-run TCB will procure some 2.20 crore litres of soybean oil, with an overall cost of around Tk 298.93 crore.

The price of per litre soybean oil would cost Tk 156.98, down from the previous consignment price of Tk 162.94.

Currently, a litre of bottled soybean oil costs around Tk 200 in the local market, but TCB is selling the oil at Tk 110 per litre to ration card holders.

Earlier on November 10, the CCGP approved a proposal of TCB to procure 12,500 tonnes of sugar from Brazil at a cost of Tk 65.98 crore. On November 3, the committee approved another proposal to purchase 55 lakh litres of soybean oil at an estimated cost of Tk 89.61 crore.

Meanwhile, the government is buying 80,000 tonnes of fertiliser from Canada and Morocco to maintain the production of agricultural products, which will cost Tk 510 crore. 

According to Sayeed Mahbub Khan, the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) will procure some 50,000 tonnes of MOP fertiliser from Canadian Commercial Corporation under the 9th lot under a state-level agreement. The lot would cost around Tk 358.48 crore. Per tonne of fertiliser will cost $679.65 against the previous price of $778.15.

Sayeed said BADC would also procure some 30,000 tonnes of TSP fertiliser from OCP, SA, Morocco under the 10th lot under a state-level agreement with around Tk 150.67 crore. The price of per tonne fertiliser under the lot will be $474 against the previous price of $678.25.

Sayeed Mahbub Khan said that the CCGP meeting also approved three proposals from the Dhaka WASA under the Local Government Division.

Besides, under the Dhaka Sanitation Improvement Project, construction and consultant recruitment proposals were approved, which will cost more than Tk 700 crore.

The all approved proposals will cost the government Tk 3,193 crore. Of this, Tk 1,964 crores will be spent from government funds and Tk 1,229 will be taken as loan from development partners.
