Banks see slower transactions in Dhaka

Bank branches in the capital, especially in Motijheel and Paltan areas, have seen low transactions amid the intensifying political tension ahead of BNP’s December 10 rally.

Branches of different banks in the Naya Paltan area were almost vacant since Thursday morning.  After the clash between Police and BNP leaders and their activists in front of the party’s Naya Paltan central office on Wednesday, customers are avoiding the area unless it was an urgent need, said bank officials from Naya Paltan area.

The presence of clients was very less comparing to other days, said an official of City Bank’s Naya Paltan branch.

As a result, the banking transaction was very low, he added. Bank officials also said that clients did not come to the Naya Paltan area because police restricted entry to that area. Meanwhile, the bank branches in Motijheel area also witnessed low transactions.

An official from Agrani Bank’s Motijheel branch said, “A lower number of clients came to branches due to political tension. Banking transactions in our branch were low on Thursday.”

Contacted, Dhaka Bank Managing Director and CEO Emranul Huq said that most of the people in Motijheel and Naya Paltan areas did not come out of home as panic gripped them due to the clash between BNP leaders and activists and police.

A man was killed and at least 30 others were injured after a violent clash erupted between police and BNP men in front of the party’s central office in the capital’s Naya Paltan on Wednesday.

BNP men alleged that the police members attacked them as they were gathering ahead of their December 10 rally.
