Strengthen cyber security in banking, other sectors: Cabinet

The cabinet on Monday directed the authorities concerned to strengthen cyber security measures in different sectors, particularly the banking sector.

The directive came up from the regular meeting of the cabinet held at the Prime Minister’s Office with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

After the meeting, outgoing Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam at a press briefing at the Cabinet Division informed journalists of such directive.

He said the cabinet issued the directive to give more emphasis on the country’s cyber security and it also called for looking into the security of the national database very seriously.

Replying to a question, Khandker Anwarul said the cyber security issue is being looked into for the past two to three years. Now, the cabinet again asked to put more emphasis on cyber security using the latest technology and equipment, he said.

He said, “I was recently in America where I saw breaches of cyber security in two or three big offices. That’s why we should put more attention to the issue because we are gradually moving towards a digital banking system.”

“We are going to the digital banking system and it needs a good security system,” he added.

Meanwhile, he said the cabinet has also instructed to complete the installation of gas and fuel pipelines quickly which is going on in different places in the country.

“The cabinet asked to speed up the installation of the pipelines so that gas and fuel can be supplied through the pipelines and it will reduce the system loss along with other losses such as carrying cost and other hazards”, said the cabinet Secretary

“It will not be possible to install the pipelines in all places at a time. The pipelines are being installed at major places to reduce costs,” he said. Apart from these, the cabinet also ordered completing the work of the project sanctioned for the next submarine cable within the shortest time, he added.
