Highest internet users in Dhaka division, lowest in Rajshahi: BBS

A maximum of 54.2 per cent households use internet in Dhaka division while the lowest 19.7 per cent households of internet users in Rajshahi division, according to the preliminary report of a national survey.

Around 97.4 per cent households in the country have telephones, but 63.1 per cent of them do not use internet. Around 52.2 per cent of the Bangladesh population has smartphone access, according to the survey conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).

The rate of internet users of total population increased from 6.7 per cent in 2013 to 38.9 per cent in 2022, the survey also said.

The BBS revealed the findings of the survey, “Access and use of ICT by the Households and Individuals 2022”, on Wednesday at the BBS auditorium in the capital.

Around 89.9 per cent male population has access to mobile phones while in the case of female population it is 90 per cent, the survey also finds.

The highest number of computer users comes from Chattogram division which is around 15 per cent of population while the lowest 4 per cent are from Barishal division, according to the survey.

Mobile usage rate also increased from 81.7 per cent in 2013 to 89.9 per cent in 2022. The ratio of computer users also increased.

Md Matiar Rahman, director general of the BBS, presided over the event also attended by Shahnaz Arefin, secretary of the Department of Statistics and Informatics Division, as the special guest.
