Planning Minister MA Mannan said that Bangladesh's economic stability despite the global economic recession is a model for many countries and the government’s economic policy has contributed to this.
“The government is working to ensure the stability of the banking sector,” he said while addressing the publication ceremony of the fourth edition of “Banking Almanac”, a book based on information on banks and financial institutions, at the DRU hall room at Segunbagicha in the capital on Saturday.
The minister said, “The global recession has created a crisis for the developed countries and it has affected Bangladesh also. Being a comparatively smaller economy, Bangladesh is trying to maintain its economic balance braving the adverse global condition. Hopefully, we will be able to handle the situation without major damage.”
The minister hoped that the book Banking Almanac will play an important role for researchers and investors.
Presiding over the event, former Bangladesh Bank governor and ‘Banking Almanac’ editorial board chairman Salehuddin Ahmed said that the book will serve as an information repository for the foreign investors and domestic and foreign research institutions.
He said making quick and correct decisions is necessary to ensure good governance in the banking sector.
He also urged the authorities concerned to make public all the initiatives and operations undertaken in the banking and financial sector of the country.
Executive Chairman of Power and Participation Research Centre Hossain Zillur Rahman said that ‘Banking Almanac’ has been playing an important role in eliminating the confusion regarding data and information of various banks and financial institutions.
He opined that the publication has been doing the right thing as actual information is necessary to depict the real economic situation of the country.
Former chairman of Association of Bankers Bangladesh Nurul Amin, former managing director of Bangladesh Shilpa Bank Md Amanullah, former chairman of Bangladesh Leasing and Finance Companies Association M Khalilur Rahman and executive editor of ‘Banking Almanac’ Syed Ziauddin Ahmed and its project director Abdar Rahman spoke, among others, on the occasion.
