The European Union is proud of being the largest customer of Bangladeshi readymade garments, said EU Ambassador and Head of Delegation to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley on Saturday.

He said the bilateral trade reached around 19 billion euros last year lauding the measures taken by the garment factories, especially the LEED-certified ones.

“I have never seen a factory like this... Its environmental-friendliness and every aspects of operation, care for the workers – these are a true inspiration,” he said after visiting Mithela Textile Industries Limited in Narayanganj. The factory secured the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification issued by the US Green Building Council.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) arranged the factory visit as part of its move to showcase the strength of the local apparel industry, its progress and branding Bangladesh.

Whiteley was accompanied by diplomats and high officials from Germany, Brunei, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Norway, Russia, Thailand, Nepal, and Australia, and representatives from buyers. Bangladesh foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen was also among the visitors.

Later, the delegation visited Fakir Fashion Ltd in Rupganj of Narayanganj which employs some 18,000 workers.

BGMEA president Faruque Hassan said Bangladesh has the highest number of 184 LEED-certified garment factories in the world and 500 more are in the process to secure the certification.

This visit aims to showcase the progress and developments Bangladesh has made in the past several years after the Rana Plaza building collapse, he added.
