Court seeks probe report on Taqsem by April 10

A Dhaka court has asked the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to submit a probe report by April 10 in a case filed against Dhaka WASA MD Taqsem A Khan and eight others on charges of embezzling Tk 132 crore.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court Judge Md Asaduzzaman on Monday passed the order after a hearing, said ACC Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam.

The case was filed by Shahab Uddin Sarkar, the secretary of WASA Karmachari Bahumukhi Samabay Samity Ltd, on November 10 last year.

Before that, on August 2, Shahab had submitted a series of documents to ACC regarding the irregularities and corruption against the nine accused.

The other accused are WASA Secretary Sharmin Haque Amir, former revenue inspector Mia Md Mizanur Rahman, Additional Chief Engineer Mohd Akhtaruzzaman, Revenue Inspector Zakir Hossain, DWSNTP Executive Engineer Badrul Alam, former deputy manager and branch manager of Janata Bank’s Karwan Bazar Corporate Branch Shyamal Biswas, the bank’s Deputy Secretary Sheikh Enayet Abdullah and Deputy Chief Accounts Officer Salekur Rahman.

Shahab alleged that Taqsem and the eight accused withdrew Tk 132,04,17,460 from the account of the cooperative of WASA employees with Janata Bank without any approval of the committee.

The matter came to light following an audit in 2018-2020, he said.
