The top 50 green factories, among a total of 100 in the world, are now in Bangladesh, and the country also has 187 LEED-certified factories, according to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

Of these factories, 63 are platinum-rated, 110 are gold-rated, 10 are silver-rated and four are certified factories. Around 550 are waiting for certification. Besides, among the top 10 LEED-certified factories in the world, eight are in Bangladesh.

BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel told The Business Post, “This is a great achievement for Bangladesh. The country’s apparel industry not only ensures the workplace environment but also focuses on sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.”

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world.

Available for virtually all building types, LEED provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings.
