85.95 per cent pass HSC, equivalent exams

The results of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and its equivalent examinations of 2022 under 11 education boards were published on Wednesday, showing a combined pass rate of 85.95 per cent.

The pass rate of the HSC and equivalent exams declined by 9.31 per cent in 2022 as the pass rate was 95.26 per cent in 2021.

Besides, the number of securing GPA 5 students also declined this year as a total of 1,76,282 examinees secured GPA 5 in 2022 against 1,89,169 in 2021.

The results were released by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office in the morning. Later Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni and Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury presented the results at a press briefing at International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka.

Explaining the reasons behind declining the pass rate, Dr Dipu Moni said the decline in the results was caused by the increase in the number of subjects on which the exams were held this year.

She said in 2021, the HSC and equivalent exams were held on only three subjects; so, the results were good. But in 2022, the exams were held on 12 subjects; so, the pass rate declined.

The result data shows that as many as 11, 77,387 students of 9,139 institutions took part in HSC and its equivalent exams at 2,637 centres under all the 11 education boards in the country. Of them, 10, 11,987 have come out successfully.

The pass rate in Dhaka is 87.83 per cent, Chattogram 80.5 per cent, Rajshahi 81.6 per cent, Cumilla 90.72 per cent, Jashore 83.95 per cent, Barishal 86.95 per cent, Sylhet 81.4 per cent, Dinajpur 79.08 per cent, Mymensingh 80.32 per cent, Madrasah 92.56 per cent and 94.41 per cent in Technical Education Board (TEB).

TEB witnessed the highest pass rate in all boards with 94.41 per cent pass rate while Cumilla board witnessed the highest pass rate among the nine general boards with 90.72 per cent pass rate.

Dinajpur board got the lowest at 79.08 per cent pass rate in the all education boards.

The highest 62,421 students scored GPA-5 in Dhaka Board while 12,670 in Chattogram, 14,991 in Cumilla, 7,386 in Barishal, 4,871 in Sylhet, 11,830 in Dinajpur, 18,703 in Jashore, 21,855 in Rajshahi, 5,028 in Mymensingh, 9,423 in Madrasah board and 7,104 in Technical board.

The result data shows that the girls have again outshined the boys in this year’s results of the HSC and equivalent exams in terms of pass rate and GPA 5.

The girls continued to outperform boys with 87.48 per bcent pass rate, compared to 84.53 per cent pass rate of boys in 11 education boards.

Besides, 95,721 girls achieved GPA 5 while 80,561 boys got the GPA 5 under all the education boards in 2022.

This year, the number of educational institutes with zero per cent pass rate increased significantly as the number of such institutes is 50 against only five in 2021.

This year the number of educational institutes with 100 per cent pass rate has also decreased as the number of such institutes is 1,330 against 1,934 in 2021.

Students from the science group did the best with 91.67 per cent pass rate while the pass rate from the humanities group was 80.54 per cent and 85.99 per cent from the business studies group.

Data also reveals that 224 students took part in HSC exams from eight foreign centres and 218 (97.32 per cent) of them came out successfully in the results.

Under nine general education boards, out of a total of 9,69,338 examinees, 8,17,230 or 84.31 per cent passed the exams while 1, 59,755 secured GPA 5.

In the madrasah board, 90,266 took the exams while 83,553 or 92.56 per cent passed and 9,423 secured the GPA 5.

Under the technical board, out of a total of 1,17,783 examinees, 1, 11,204 or 94.41 per cent passed and 7,104 secured GPA 5.

The HSC and equivalent examinations were held between November 6 and December 22 in 2022.

Technical and Madrasah Education Division Senior Secretary Md Kamal Hossain and Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Suleman Khan were also present at the press conference.
