Rajshahi University (RU) authorities have suspended all scheduled classes and examinations for two days (Sunday and Monday) following a series of clashes between RU students and locals, particularly the businessmen, on Saturday night.
Prof Prodip Kumar Pandey, the administrator of the Public Relations Office, said the decision has been taken due to an unavoidable situation. The classes and examinations will again resume as usual from Tuesday, he added.
On Sunday afternoon, the campus-adjacent Binodpur Bazar area turned into a battleground when a clash between the students and locals erupted following a trifling matter.
Within a few hours, the violence spread to other adjacent areas. The students took positions at the Binodpur gate area while the businessmen were on the Rajshahi-Dhaka Highway at Binodpur Bazar. Both warring groups hurled stones and brickbats at each other, leaving several injured.
Police also fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the agitated students.
Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, RU Vice-chancellor Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar and Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner Anisur Rahman rushed to the scene and stayed there from 8pm to 10pm to restore a normal situation.
Meanwhile, additional police forces and seven BGB platoons were deployed on the RU campus and its adjacent areas to keep the situation under control.
