Broiler chicken prices fell by Tk 20-30 per kg on Saturday, two days after four big farms had announced price reductions.
In the capital’s kitchen markets on Saturday, broiler chicken was sold at Tk 230-250 per kg, which was Tk 260-270 per kg till Thursday.
Md Raju, a chicken seller at Mugda kitchen market, said prices have come down at the wholesale level and that is why retailers are also selling at lower prices.
He said prices may fall again on Sunday (today) to Tk 200-220 per kg.
Businessmen said farms now have lower demand for chicken as restaurants are closed due to Ramadan. They said prices might decrease further on Sunday (today) or Monday.
On Thursday, four leading poultry companies fixed farm-level broiler chicken prices at Tk 190-195 per kg.
Prices in the market started falling after that. On Friday, prices decreased by Tk 10 to Tk 250-260 per kg.
In addition to corporate farms, chicken prices fell at marginal ones also. Broiler chicken was sold at Tk 200 per kg in farms outside Dhaka, including those in Gazipur, on Saturday, which was Tk 225 per kg till Thursday.
Meanwhile, sonali chicken prices also fell slightly. It was sold at Tk 350-360 per kg on Saturday, down from Tk 370-380 per kg two days ago.
Bangladesh Poultry Farm Protection National Council and Poultry Professional’s Bangladesh regularly collect data on chicken prices in marginal farms. According to their data, broiler chicken in Gazipur and Dhaka was sold at Tk 198-200 per kg on Saturday, which was Tk 220-225 per kg on Thursday.
